Combo meals and the order-type tax problem
A fast food receipt has two structural features you don't find on most retail receipts. First, combo meals bundle a main item, side, and drink at a single price, so the components appear as indented modifier lines at $0.00 below the parent combo line. Upsizes and add-ons carry their own charge and print as separate lines.
Second, the order type (dine-in, drive-thru, or delivery) affects tax in some states. In California, for example, cold food sold to go is not taxed at a restaurant that falls below the state's 80-80 rule, while the same food eaten at the restaurant is. The ORDER TYPE field on the receipt documents which applies, giving the business a defensible audit trail and giving the customer an accurate total.

A complete fast food receipt includes these fields from top to bottom:

Sales tax on fast food receipts
In California, cold food sold to go is not taxed at a restaurant that falls below the state's 80-80 rule (more than 80% of its sales are food, and more than 80% of its food sales are taxable). Food eaten in the restaurant (dine-in) and hot food such as burgers and fries are taxed. The order type printed on the receipt documents this distinction.

Combo meals print as a parent line with the main item name (e.g. BIG COMBO MEAL #1) and an indented list of the components: sandwich, side, and drink. Component prices are zero because the combo price covers all three. Upgrades appear as add-on lines.

Does the receipt show an order number?
Yes. Fast-food receipts print a 3- or 4-digit order number prominently, usually at the top, so the customer can match it to the pickup announcement.
Can I include a mobile-app or loyalty reward redemption?
Yes. Loyalty redemptions print as a negative line (REWARD REDEEMED -X.XX) with a loyalty account ID. Mobile-app order numbers print with an APP ORDER header and a pickup-by time for accuracy.
What payment methods are typical on fast-food receipts?
