Fast Food Receipt Generator

Create fast food receipts with combo meal itemization, order numbers, drive-thru versus dine-in order types, and state-accurate prepared-food tax. Free. Download as PNG or PDF in under two minutes.

Fast food receipts include the restaurant chain name, store number, order number, drive-thru or counter indicator, itemized menu items with modifiers (no onion, extra cheese), combo meal pricing, subtotal, sales tax, and total. Common items include value-menu items ($1-$3), combo meals ($7-$12), kids meals ($5-$7), and breakfast platters ($5-$9). Most states tax fast food at the regular sales tax rate, though some (like Illinois) apply a higher prepared-food rate.

Combo Meals and the Order-Type Tax Problem

A fast food receipt has two structural features you don't find on most retail receipts. First, combo meals bundle a main item, side, and drink at a single price, so the components appear as indented modifier lines at $0.00 below the parent combo line. Upsizes and add-ons carry their own charge and print as separate lines.

Second, the order type (dine-in, drive-thru, or delivery) affects tax in a handful of states. Illinois, for example, taxes dine-in meals at a higher rate than to-go orders. The ORDER TYPE field on the receipt documents which applies, giving the business a defensible audit trail and giving the customer an accurate total.

Sales Tax on Fast Food Receipts

Prepared fast food is taxable in all states with a general sales tax. A few states apply different rates depending on whether the order is eaten in the restaurant (dine-in) or taken out. The ORDER TYPE field on the receipt documents this distinction so the correct rate is applied.

Select your state in the generator to auto-fill the current prepared-food rate. For state-by-state details on food tax rules, see the Sales Tax Rates by State tool.

Fast Food Receipt: Frequently Asked Questions

How are combo meals itemized?

Combo meals print as a parent line with the main item name (e.g. BIG COMBO MEAL #1) and an indented list of the components: sandwich, side, and drink. Component prices are zero because the combo price covers all three. Upgrades appear as add-on lines.

Are drive-thru and dine-in taxed differently?

In some states, dine-in food is taxed as prepared food while drive-thru or to-go items are taxed at the grocery rate. The template applies the correct rate based on the ORDER TYPE field when you pick a state with this distinction.

Can I add upsizes and menu modifiers?

Yes. Upsize a drink or side from medium to large and the price adjustment prints as a separate line. Modifiers like NO PICKLE or EXTRA MAYO print under the parent item. Paid modifiers include the upcharge; no-cost ones display at $0.00.

Does the receipt show an order number?

Yes. Fast-food receipts print a 3- or 4-digit order number prominently, usually at the top, so the customer can match it to the pickup announcement. The template supports sequential numbering that auto-increments for batch receipts.

Can I include a mobile-app or loyalty reward redemption?

Yes. Loyalty redemptions print as a negative line (REWARD REDEEMED -X.XX) with a loyalty account ID. Mobile-app order numbers print with an APP ORDER header and a pickup-by time for accuracy.

What payment methods are typical on fast-food receipts?

Most fast-food chains accept credit, debit, cash, mobile-wallet payments, gift cards, and chain-specific app payments. The template supports each. For delivery orders, a third-party delivery platform like DoorDash or Uber Eats can be shown as the payment method.
