Sales Tax on Cafe Receipts
Prepared hot coffee and cafe food are taxable at the full prepared-food rate in all states with sales tax. Packaged whole bean coffee and retail merchandise sold at the counter are taxed at the retail rate, which may differ. In some states, packaged coffee qualifies as a grocery item and is taxed at the reduced grocery rate or is exempt.
