Cafe receipts include the cafe name, barista ID, order number, itemized drinks with size and milk modifiers, food items, subtotal, sales tax, optional tip line, and payment method. Common items include espresso drinks ($3-$6), brewed coffee ($2-$4), pastries ($3-$5), and breakfast sandwiches ($5-$8). Why cafe receipts are more detailed than they look
A cafe receipt treats drinks as highly configurable parent items. A latte is not a single line at a single price; it is a base item followed by modifiers for size, milk type, extra shots, and syrups, each with its own price. Oat milk runs $0.50–$0.80 extra. An extra espresso shot is $0.75–$1.00. The receipt must show each modifier so the customer can verify the total and so the business can reconcile modifier revenue against modifier cost.
The loyalty layer adds another dimension. Cafes run points programs where each dollar spent earns stars, punches, or points redeemable for free items. A full cafe receipt shows the loyalty points earned and any rewards applied as a negative redemption line, creating a complete financial record for both parties.

A complete cafe receipt includes these fields:

Sales tax on cafe receipts
Hot coffee is not taxed the same way in every state. In California, a hot coffee sold to go for its own price is exempt at a cafe that does not meet the state's 80-80 rule (more than 80% of sales from food, and more than 80% of food sales taxable). The same coffee drunk at the cafe's tables is taxed. Packaged whole bean coffee and retail merchandise sold at the counter are taxed at the retail rate, which may differ. In some states, packaged coffee qualifies as a grocery item and is taxed at the reduced grocery rate or is exempt.

Cafe receipt: frequently asked questions
How are drink modifiers priced?
Drink modifiers print as indented lines under the parent item with their own prices. Milk alternatives (oat, almond, soy) are typically $0.50–$0.80 extra. Extra shots range $0.75–$1.00. Flavor pumps are often free or $0.50. The template supports any modifier configuration.
Does the receipt show drink size?
Yes. Add the size (TALL, GRANDE, VENTI, or SM, MD, LG) to each drink's item name and enter that size's price.
Can I add a tip on a cafe receipt?
Yes. Most cafe POS systems prompt for a tip on card transactions. The editor has no tip field, so add the tip as its own line item.
Are loyalty points and rewards shown?
Yes. Loyalty accounts show earned points for the transaction (e.g. STARS EARNED: 17) and any rewards redeemed. Redeemed rewards appear as negative lines.
Is coffee taxable?
It depends on the state and on how the coffee is sold.
