Bar Receipt Generator
Create bar receipts that carry alcohol excise tax on top of sales tax, track multiple drinks on a single tab with open and close timestamps, and support bottle service, happy-hour pricing, and gratuity. Free. Download as PNG or PDF.
Bar receipts include the bar name, bartender name, server station, itemized drinks (beer, wine, cocktails, shots), bottle service tier if applicable, happy-hour discounts, food items, subtotal, alcohol sales tax (higher than the general rate in some states, like Illinois which adds tax on packaged liquor by the drink), tip, and total. Common pricing includes domestic beer ($5-$8), craft cocktails ($12-$18), wine by the glass ($10-$15), and bottle service ($300-$1,500+). Receipts are used for business client-entertainment deductions and per-diem records.
Alcohol Excise Tax and the Tab Structure
Bar receipts carry a tax layer that food receipts don't: alcohol excise tax. Every state imposes an excise tax on beer, wine, and spirits at different rates per gallon or per unit. This tax is on top of general sales tax and appears as a separate line so both the customer and the accountant can see the total tax burden on alcohol versus food items on the same tab.
The tab structure is the other defining feature. A bar tab accumulates multiple drinks under a single tab number opened when the customer arrives and closed when they pay. The receipt documents the full session: which drinks were ordered, when the tab was opened and closed, the bartender, and the final total including gratuity.

Sales Tax on Bar Receipts
Alcohol carries state excise tax in addition to sales tax. Rates vary by beverage type: beer, wine, and spirits each have their own excise rate, and those rates differ by state. Food ordered at the bar is taxed at the general prepared-food rate with no excise component. The generator applies both tax layers correctly when you select your state.
For state-by-state tax rate details, use the Sales Tax Rates by State tool. Gratuity is never subject to sales tax and always prints after the tax line.
How to Generate a Bar Receipt in 4 Steps

Bar Receipt — Frequently Asked Questions
Is alcohol taxed differently than food?
Yes. Most states apply an additional alcohol excise tax on top of general sales tax. The excise tax rate varies by beverage type — beer, wine, and spirits are each taxed differently. The template adds an ALCOHOL TAX line separate from sales tax.
How do tabs work on the receipt?
A bar tab tracks multiple drinks over a session under a single tab number. The template supports an OPENED and CLOSED timestamp with all drinks accumulated between them. A single payment at close-out settles the full tab.
Can I add bottle service to the receipt?
Yes. Bottle service appears as a single line with the bottle name, vintage or brand, and price. Additional service fees, mixers, and mandatory gratuity (often 18–20%) print as separate add-on lines.
Does the receipt handle happy-hour pricing?
Yes. Happy-hour prices can be set on drinks within a time window. A HAPPY HOUR notation prints next to discounted items, and discount amounts show as modifiers. The template matches how most bar POS systems print the discount trail.
How is gratuity handled on a bar tab?
A gratuity line appears after the total. The template supports suggested tip percentages or a fixed auto-gratuity for large parties or tabs above a threshold. Gratuity is not subject to sales tax and prints after the tax line.
Can I include food orders on a bar receipt?
Yes. Bar food like wings, nachos, or appetizers prints on the same tab as drinks. Food is taxed at the regular prepared-food rate (no alcohol excise) and the template handles the split tax calculation automatically.
