Why convenience store receipts have more tax lines
A convenience store receipt is deceptively complex. A basket of five items (a candy bar, a soda, a scratch ticket, and a pack of cigarettes) can produce four different tax treatments. General merchandise pays sales tax. Cigarettes carry a per-pack excise tax ($1.41 a pack in Texas), and Texas taxes beer and liquor by the gallon. Lottery tickets must still appear as line items.
The key differentiator is excise tax disclosure. Convenience stores also frequently process fuel, money orders, and bill payments, each with its own fee and tax treatment on the same narrow receipt.

Convenience store receipt: frequently asked questions
Why are tobacco and alcohol taxed separately?
Cigarettes carry a per-pack excise tax that is separate from sales tax. Texas charges $1.41 on a pack of 20, and New York State charges $5.35. Alcohol carries its own excise taxes too. Texas, for example, taxes beer and liquor by the gallon. The generator prints a single TAX line at the rate you set.
Can I include lottery tickets on the receipt?
Yes. Lottery tickets show up as line items. In the generator, mark lottery lines non-taxable (N) to keep them out of the sales tax.
How realistic is the small-basket formatting?
The generator produces the short, tightly-spaced layout typical of convenience stores, usually three to eight items on a narrow thermal strip with minimal header text. You can switch the font size between standard and compact.
Does the receipt handle fuel purchases?
For a fuel-only receipt use the Gas Station template instead. This convenience-store template handles inside-store purchases. If a customer bought fuel plus inside items, generate two receipts or add a PUMP # line.
What payment methods are typical on convenience store receipts?
Cash is still dominant at convenience stores, followed by debit, credit, and EBT/SNAP for eligible items. The generator's payment section offers cash or card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, debit, or gift card).
Can I add a money order or bill-pay line?
