The dinner, item by item
AFBF's 2025 prices for each item, as a national average and adjusted to each region. The regional columns are a proportional adjustment: each item is the national price times the region's total over the national total, rounded so the items add up to AFBF's regional total. AFBF publishes regional totals, not regional item prices.

State highlights
What the grocery tax does to the same dinner in six states, at the default settings
Idaho
Most expensive dinnerIdaho taxes groceries at its full 6% rate, and it is in the West, AFBF's most expensive region. The $61.75 of groceries pay $3.71 in tax, for $65.46, the most in the list.
Hawaii
Tax on every itemHawaii's general excise tax has no grocery exemption. In Honolulu the 4.5% rate adds $2.78 to the dinner, which comes to $64.53.
Alabama
Most tax in the SouthAlabama cut its state tax on food to 2%, but Huntsville and Madison County tax groceries at their full local rates, so the dinner pays 7% in all, $3.50. That is the most tax on the dinner in the South and puts Alabama at #16 of 50.
South Dakota
Full rate in the MidwestSouth Dakota taxes groceries at its full 4.2% state rate, and Sioux Falls adds 2%, so the dinner pays $3.37, the most in the Midwest, for $57.75.
Missouri
Low state rate, full local rateMissouri's state tax on food is 1.225%, but Kansas City's local taxes add 4.75%, so the dinner pays $3.25 in tax and costs $57.63.
Kansas and Virginia
Smallest tax that appliesOf the states where the dinner pays tax, Kansas and Virginia charge the least, 1% through the Sedgwick County sales tax and the Virginia Beach local tax on food, $0.54 and $0.50 on the dinner. Both exempt food from the state tax. Georgia does too, but Atlanta's local taxes add $2.45.
Frequently asked questions
Where is Thanksgiving dinner cheapest?
At AFBF's 2025 prices, the dinner for 10 costs $50.01 in Delaware, Florida, Kentucky, Maryland, Texas and West Virginia, the least in the list. They are in the South, AFBF's least expensive region at $50.01, and their largest cities charge no tax on groceries.
Where is Thanksgiving dinner most expensive?
Idaho is the most expensive at $65.46, then Hawaii at $64.53 and Utah at $63.60. All three are in the West, AFBF's most expensive region, and tax groceries.
Which states charge sales tax on groceries?
In the largest city of 17 states the dinner's groceries pay sales tax: Alabama (7%), Arkansas (2.125%), Georgia (4.9%), Hawaii (4.5%), Idaho (6%), Illinois (1.5%), Kansas (1%), Louisiana (4.5%), Mississippi (5%), Missouri (5.975%), North Carolina (2%), Oklahoma (4.125%), South Carolina (2%), South Dakota (6.2%), Tennessee (6.25%), Utah (3%) and Virginia (1%). Hawaii, Idaho and South Dakota tax groceries at the full state rate.
How are the state prices worked out?
AFBF surveys prices across the country and publishes a national average for each item and a total for each of four regions, not prices by state. This page gives each state its region's total and spreads it across the items in proportion to the national prices, so it is a proportional adjustment, not a price survey of that state. The turkey at $21.50 nationally becomes $24.06 in the West, for example.
When does the 2026 survey come out?
AFBF has not announced a date. Its 2025 survey came out on November 19, 2025, the week before Thanksgiving, and this page will switch to the 2026 prices when they are published. The 2025 dinner cost $55.18, down from $58.08 in 2024.
Is any item taxed differently from the rest?
Not as the page buys them. Every item on AFBF's list is food for home consumption, so a state taxes all of them alike. A veggie tray the store assembles itself is taxed as prepared food at the general rate in Tennessee, Minnesota, New York, Maine, Colorado and Arkansas, and dinner rolls baked in the store are in Tennessee, North Carolina and Oklahoma. The page assumes a packaged tray and packaged rolls.
Our Methodology
The dinner and its prices
- The dinner is the American Farm Bureau Federation's classic Thanksgiving dinner for 10, from its 2025 survey, released November 19, 2025: 16 lb turkey, 14 oz cubed stuffing mix, 3 lb sweet potatoes, 1 dozen dinner rolls, 1 lb frozen peas, 12 oz fresh cranberries, 1 lb veggie tray (carrots and celery), 2 pie crusts, 30 oz pumpkin pie mix, 1/2 pint whipping cream, 1 gallon whole milk and 1 group misc. ingredients, $55.18 in all. The miscellaneous group is coffee and ingredients necessary to prepare the meal, such as butter, evaporated milk, onions, eggs, sugar and flour. Volunteer shoppers in all 50 states and Puerto Rico checked prices in person and online in the first week of November 2025, taking the best available price without special promotional coupons or combined purchase deals. The 2026 survey has not been published yet, and this page will use it when it is. [1] [2] [5]
- AFBF publishes a total for each of four regions: Northeast $60.82 (9 states), Midwest $54.38 (12 states), South $50.01 (16 states) and West $61.75 (13 states). AFBF does not list the states in each region; its map follows the Census Bureau's regions, so those are used. [3] [4]
- Each state gets its region's total. The page spreads it across the items in proportion to AFBF's national prices, a proportional adjustment: each item is its national price times the region's total over the national total (1.1022 in the Northeast, 0.9855 in the Midwest, 0.9063 in the South and 1.1191 in the West), rounded to the cent so the items add up exactly to the regional total. The guest control scales every item by guests over 10, and the price control can use AFBF's national prices instead.
- Download the data at the default settings as a CSV file.
How we calculate
- The groceries pay the sales taxes a shopper pays at a grocery store in the state's largest city: the state's tax on food for home consumption and any county, city or district tax on it. Every AFBF item, including the coffee in the miscellaneous group, is food under each state's rules when bought packaged at a grocery store, so each tax applies to the whole grocery bill. Tennessee's rate is Davidson County's food rate from November 1, 2026, the one in force at Thanksgiving.
- A veggie tray the store assembles itself is prepared food, taxed at the general rate, in Tennessee, Minnesota, New York, Maine, Colorado and Arkansas, and may be in Maryland, Connecticut, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Vermont and North Dakota. Dinner rolls baked in the store are prepared food in Tennessee, North Carolina and Oklahoma, and may be in Rhode Island. The page assumes a tray and rolls packaged by a manufacturer, which are food everywhere. Sources: tray Tennessee [71], Minnesota [72], New York [46], Maine [73], Colorado [14], Arkansas [74], Maryland [33], Connecticut [75], North Carolina [76], Rhode Island [77], Vermont [78], North Dakota [79]; rolls Tennessee [71], North Carolina [80], Oklahoma [81], Rhode Island [77].
- Coupons, store discounts and deposits are left out, as AFBF leaves out promotional coupons. Purchases made with SNAP benefits are not modeled.
- Each tax is a percentage of the grocery bill, rounded to the cent, and the receipt adds them. The price per person is the total over the number of guests, rounded to the cent. States that tie share a rank.
Secondary sources
Where no current primary document gives an amount, the page uses the best other source and marks it "secondary". A charge that exists is never counted as zero. 3 values come from secondary sources.
- Region membership. AFBF publishes no list of the states in each region. Its 2025 map shades four regions whose borders follow the Census Bureau's, so the Census Bureau's state lists are used.
- Contents of the miscellaneous group. AFBF's 2025 release does not list what its miscellaneous group holds. A 2018 newspaper reprint of the AFBF release does, and the menu has not changed since 1986.
- Tennessee, Davidson County transit surcharge 0.5%. The Department of Revenue's notice of the November 1, 2026 food rate does not say whether Davidson County's 0.5% transit surcharge still applies to food, so the page keeps it, as before the cut.
Update Schedule
This page is updated when AFBF publishes each year's survey, and grocery taxes are reviewed quarterly. The current data reflects AFBF's 2025 survey and taxes checked in October 2026. [6]
