Average airfare by airport
BTS's average domestic itinerary fare for each of the top 100 airports by originating passengers in 2026 Q2, released September 29, 2026, with the same quarter a year earlier. The two quarters come from different ticket samples. BTS says "Prior to the third quarter (Q3) of 2025, the ticket sampling collection was performed on a 10% basis" and that from July 1, 2025 it "changed to a 40% basis", so part of any change between them may come from the method. BTS counts a round trip as one fare, or a one-way fare where no return was bought, and includes taxes and fees but not bag fees or other optional extras. BTS's top 100 tables leave out airports in Alaska and Hawaii. The numbers in brackets point to the source list below.

Airport highlights
What a round trip costs from six places, at the default settings
Sanford, FL (SFB)
Cheapest airportAllegiant carries almost every passenger at Sanford, and the average fare there was $140.08 in 2026 Q2, the lowest in the top 100. As a round trip, $37.96 of it is taxes and fees, including Sanford's $4.00 facility charge, the only one in the 100 below $4.50.
Birmingham, AL (BHM)
Most expensive airportBirmingham's average fare was $560.27, the highest of the 100. Southwest is its largest airline, and a checked bag each way adds $90.00 for a trip total of $650.27.
New Haven, CT (HVN)
One airline's airportAvelo is New Haven's largest airline, and the average fare was $188.63. Avelo prices bags by route and by when they are bought, from $47.00 to $75.00 each way, so the receipt uses the lowest.
Los Angeles, CA (LAX)
Busiest airportLos Angeles had the most originating passengers in BTS's 2026 Q2 tables, and its average fare was $499.60. Delta is its largest airline, with 23% of passengers.
Southwest Airlines
Bags are no longer freeSouthwest now charges $45.00 for a first checked bag and $55.00 for a second on its lower fares, the same as Delta, Alaska and the advance price at United and American. It is the largest airline at 46 of the top 100 airports.
Fares year on year
Every airport roseAll 100 airports had a higher average fare in 2026 Q2 than in 2025 Q2. BTS drew the earlier fares from a 10% sample of tickets and the later ones from a 40% sample, after a change on July 1, 2025, so part of the rise may come from the method.

Frequently asked questions
Which airport has the cheapest flights?
Among the top 100 US airports, Sanford, FL (SFB) had the lowest average domestic fare in 2026 Q2 at $140.08, then St. Petersburg, FL (PIE) at $150.88 and New Haven, CT (HVN) at $188.63.
Which airport has the most expensive flights?
Birmingham, AL (BHM) had the highest average fare at $560.27, followed by Madison, WI (MSN) at $537.43 and Charlotte, NC (CLT) at $531.83.
How much of an airfare is taxes and fees?
On a nonstop round trip, the federal taxes and fees are the 7.5% ticket tax, $5.30 for each flight segment and the $5.60 September 11 Security Fee each way, plus the passenger facility charge of up to $4.50 at each airport. In the median airport's average fare, that comes to $60.02.
Do BTS average fares include bag fees?
No. BTS's fares include the taxes and fees paid when the ticket is bought but not fees for optional services such as checked bags, seat selection or upgrades. The receipts add bag fees separately, from each airline's own fee page.
How much does a checked bag cost?
Delta, United, American, Southwest, Alaska and JetBlue charge $45.00 each way for a first checked bag paid in advance on a domestic flight, $90.00 round trip. United and American charge $50.00 at the airport. Allegiant and Avelo price bags by route.
When will the fares be updated?
BTS releases each quarter's fares about three months after it ends. Its next release, for the third quarter of 2026, is due on or around January 8, 2027, and the page will be updated then.
Our Methodology
Fares and airports
- The fare is BTS's average domestic itinerary fare for the airport in 2026 Q2, the latest quarter, for the top 100 airports by originating passengers. BTS counts a round trip as one fare, or a one-way fare where no return was bought, so the average mixes both. Its fares include the taxes and fees paid at purchase but not bag fees, seat selection or other optional services. West Palm Beach's fare is the whole-dollar figure from BTS's Table 10, because the airport is missing from BTS's cents-level list. [2] [4]
- Download the data at the default settings as a CSV file.
How we calculate
- The receipt splits each average fare as if it were a nonstop round trip, two flight segments and two one-way trips. The segment fees, the security fee and both facility charges are fixed amounts. The destination is assumed to charge $4.50, the level 99 of the 100 airports charge. The 7.5% ticket tax applies to the airline's base fare, not to the segment fees, the security fee or the facility charges, so the base fare is what remains of the fare after the fixed fees, divided by 1.075. The ticket tax is rounded to the cent and the lines add up to BTS's fare. [7] [10] [12]
- Bags are those of the airport's largest airline by passengers in BTS's figures for August 2025 to July 2026. Where BTS's largest carrier is a regional that flies for several brands, the largest branded airline is used. The default is one checked bag each way, paid in advance; the controls show no bags, two bags, or the price at the airport. [24]
Secondary sources
Where no current primary document gives an amount, the page uses the best other source and marks it "secondary". A fee that exists is never counted as zero. 2 airlines' bag fees rest on secondary sources: United and Allegiant.
- United. United publishes only a route calculator, which plain requests cannot run. Its $45 advance and $50 airport prices for a first bag come from CNBC's April 2, 2026 report quoting United, and the second bag adds the $10 increase United announced.
- Allegiant. Allegiant prices bags by route and publishes no single fee. The advance price is the median of its route prices from each airport in the fee calculator data on its own site, as archived on July 14, 2026, and $75 at the airport is the highest price in that data.
Update Schedule
BTS publishes each quarter about three months after it ends; the next release is due on or around January 8, 2027. The 2027 segment fee had not been published when the data was checked. Fees reflect airline and federal rates checked in October 2026. [1] The map places each airport at the FAA's coordinates [13].
