Shipping receipts include the carrier name (USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL), tracking number, sender and recipient addresses, package weight and dimensions, service tier (Ground, 2-Day, Overnight), declared-value insurance, signature requirement, base rate, fuel surcharge (5-10% of base), residential delivery fee, and total. Common rates include $5-$15 (USPS Priority small package), $15-$40 (UPS Ground), and $30-$80 (FedEx overnight). Receipts are required for shipping insurance claims, proof of delivery, and business expense tracking.
How a Shipping Receipt Differs From Courier and Delivery Receipts
Shipping receipts (USPS, UPS, FedEx, DHL) print carrier, service level (ground, 2-day, overnight), dimensional weight, insurance, and tracking number. Rates depend on weight, package dimensions, and destination zone. The tracking number links the receipt to the carrier's scan history, delivery confirmation, and proof of delivery.
Dimensional weight billing means a large but light package may be billed at a higher rate than its actual weight suggests. Insurance declared value prints on the receipt for customs and damage claim purposes. Fuel surcharges from UPS and FedEx fluctuate weekly and appear as a percentage of the base rate. Signature confirmation adds a separate fee and requires the recipient to sign before the package is released.

Sales Tax on Shipping Receipts
Shipping charges are taxable in NY, TX, PA, and several other states when the items being shipped are also taxable. In CA, CO, FL, and others, separately stated shipping is exempt from sales tax. Insurance and signature confirmation fees are treated as service charges and follow each state's service-tax rules. Fuel surcharges are generally taxable as part of the shipping charge.
The generator applies the correct tax treatment based on the sender's state when you make a selection. A custom local rate field handles county surcharges.

Shipping Receipt - Frequently Asked Questions
What service levels are supported?
The template supports all major carrier service levels: USPS Priority Mail, First-Class, and Media Mail; UPS Ground, 3-Day Select, 2-Day Air, and Next-Day Air; FedEx Ground, Express Saver, 2-Day, and Overnight. Each prints with its carrier-specific service name.
What is dimensional weight?
Dimensional weight (DIM weight) is a billing method that charges based on package size rather than actual weight when the package is large but light. Each carrier uses a DIM divisor (USPS 166, UPS and FedEx 139). The template calculates DIM weight and bills the greater of actual or DIM weight.
How is insurance shown?
Insurance prints as a separate line with the declared value and premium. USPS insurance ranges $2-6 for up to $500 coverage. UPS and FedEx include $100 free declared value and charge for additional coverage above that threshold. The template supports each carrier's insurance structure.
What is signature confirmation?
Signature confirmation requires the recipient to sign for delivery. USPS Signature Confirmation costs $3-6. UPS and FedEx offer direct signature and adult signature tiers at different prices. The template supports each signature service option as a separate line.
Is shipping taxable?
Shipping charges are taxable in some states (NY, TX, PA) when the items being shipped are taxable, and tax-exempt in others (CA when separately stated). The template applies the state-appropriate rule based on the sender's state.
Does the receipt support a return shipping label?
Yes. Return labels print with a distinct RETURN LABEL notation and a separate tracking number. The recipient uses this label to send items back. The template supports both outbound and return receipts in a single print run.
What is a fuel surcharge on a shipping receipt?
Fuel surcharges are a percentage added to the base shipping rate to cover variable fuel costs. UPS and FedEx adjust their fuel surcharge weekly based on published fuel indexes, typically ranging 5-20% of the base rate. The template shows FUEL SURCHARGE as a separate line so the customer can see the split between base rate and fuel cost.
How are international shipping duties and taxes shown on a shipping receipt?
International shipments include a declared value used for customs valuation, which prints on the shipping receipt. Duties and destination-country VAT are typically collected from the recipient at delivery or separately; they are not prepaid on the outbound shipping receipt. The template supports a DECLARED VALUE field for customs documentation and an optional DUTIES (COLLECTED ON DELIVERY) notation.
