State highlights
What a year of gas tax and EV fees comes to in six states, at the default settings
Florida
Biggest EV savingFlorida charges no EV fee, and a gas car driven its average 12,600 miles burns 492.2 gallons a year, paying $197.35 in state gas tax and $90.56 in federal. The EV saves $287.91.
Oklahoma
EV pays the mostOklahoma charges an electric car a $100 motor fuels tax fee and a $110 registration fee, $210.00 a year. Its 20-cent gas tax is among the lowest, so a gas car pays $179.90 and the EV pays $30.10 more. Oklahoma also taxes fast charging at 3 cents a kWh.
New Jersey
Highest EV feeNew Jersey charges $270.00 a year, the highest fee, and raises it $10 each July 1. Its gas tax is 49.15 cents a gallon, so a gas car there pays $336.86 with federal tax.
Kansas
A fee that replaces anotherKansas registers an electric car for $165 instead of the $30 a gas car pays, so the receipt counts the $135 difference. With the state's 15,334 average miles, a gas car pays $260.14 in gas tax.
Mississippi
Most miles drivenMississippi drivers average 17,594 miles, the most of any state in FHWA's figures, so a gas car burns 687.3 gallons and pays $294.15 in gas tax against an EV fee of at least $161.00.
Florida
No EV fee, high gas taxFlorida has no EV fee, and its state gas taxes come to 40.096 cents a gallon. A gas car driven 12,600 miles pays $287.91 a year in gas tax.

Frequently asked questions
Do electric cars pay more in fees than gas cars pay in gas tax?
In 5 states, at each state's average miles and a gas car at 25.6 mpg: Minnesota, Tennessee, Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma. Everywhere else the EV fee is less than the state and federal gas tax a gas car pays, by a median of $65.40 in Louisiana.
Which states have the highest EV registration fees?
New Jersey ($270.00), Michigan ($267.00), Pennsylvania ($250.00), Indiana ($242.00) and Georgia ($238.59) have the highest yearly fees for an electric car.
Which states have no EV fee?
Alaska, Arizona, Connecticut, Florida, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Mexico and New York charge no fee because a car is electric. New Mexico's fee starts on January 1, 2027.
Which states have the highest gas tax?
California (73.64 cents), Illinois (71.7 cents), Indiana (64.5 cents), Washington (60.169 cents) and Pennsylvania (58.7 cents) have the highest state taxes and fees on gasoline in EIA's compilation, before the federal 18.4 cents.
Which states tax public EV charging?
Iowa (2.6¢/kWh), Kentucky (3.2¢/kWh), Montana (3¢/kWh), Oklahoma (3¢/kWh), Pennsylvania (1.72¢/kWh), Utah (12.5% of the price), Wisconsin (3¢/kWh) and Wyoming (3.5¢/kWh) tax electricity sold at public chargers, most only at fast chargers. Georgia starts on January 1, 2027.
What changes on January 1, 2027?
In California, the road improvement fee rises from $121 to $127. In Tennessee, the electric vehicle fee rises from $200 to $274 at renewals. In New Mexico, a new $70 electric vehicle fee starts, rising $10 a year after. In Vermont, the $89 fee becomes a charge of 1.4 cents a mile, at most $178 a year. In New Hampshire, the surcharge moves to weight tiers; a midsize EV stays at $100. In Minnesota, the gas tax rises from 32.6 to 32.8 cents a gallon. In Georgia, a tax on electricity sold at public chargers starts, at the gas tax rate for every 11 kWh. The EV fees in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Utah and the gas taxes in ten states also reset that day to amounts not yet published.
Our Methodology
Miles and fuel economy
- Miles are FHWA's Highway Statistics 2024, the latest edition: each state's light-duty vehicle miles (table VM-2 by road type, times table VM-4's share for cars and light trucks) divided by its registered cars and light trucks (table MV-1, with heavy trucks removed at the national share because MV-1 does not split trucks by state). Summed over the states, the method gives FHWA's national figure of 10,787 miles per vehicle. FHWA's 2024 vehicle counts for Delaware and New York are far from the states' own, so the states' counts are used there, and both are named below.
- For Delaware, FHWA counts 447,094 vehicles, which would give 21,968 miles each. The state counts 990,678, which gives the 9,638 miles used [84].
- For New York, FHWA counts 20,991,098 vehicles, which would give 5,821 miles each. The state counts 10,988,769, which gives the 10,962 miles used [85].

How we calculate
- The gas car pays each state's taxes and fees on gasoline as EIA compiles them for July 1, 2026, plus the federal 18.4 cents a gallon. New York's 8-cent state sales tax on motor fuel, which EIA notes but leaves out of its total, is added. Local fuel taxes and percentage taxes EIA leaves out are not counted. The car gets 25.6 mpg, EPA's average real-world fuel economy for model year 2024 new vehicles without battery-electric and plug-in hybrid models (27.2 mpg with them). Gallons are the miles divided by the mpg, and each tax is rounded to the cent.
- The EV pays the yearly fee its state charges because the car is electric, from the state's DMV, revenue department or statute, checked against NCSL's and ARTBA's lists. Where a state sells a two-year registration, the yearly share is used. Kansas registers an EV for $165 instead of $30, so the $135 difference is counted. Minnesota's fee is set by value, and the page uses a new $40,000 EV, $200. Registration every car pays is left off both sides. Fees charged only at renewal, as in California, Tennessee and Washington, are counted as yearly.
- A state tax on electricity sold at public chargers is shown on the receipt but not added to it, because it depends on where the owner charges.
- Rates are EIA's July 1, 2026 compilation, the rates the law sets for the year. Temporary changes in 2026 are not used: Illinois suspended its July 2026 increase through December 31, so the excise is 48.3 cents, not 49.6. Utah cut its rate to 31.9 cents from July 1 to December 31, 2026. Indiana stopped collecting its gasoline excise and use tax under emergency orders through November 4, 2026. North Carolina's excise is zero from October 10 to November 30, 2026. Georgia suspended its excise from September 29 to October 29, 2026.
Secondary sources
Where no current primary document gives an amount, the page uses the best other source and marks it "secondary". A fee that exists is never counted as zero. Nine EV fees rest on secondary sources.
- Alaska. $0.00. The Alaska DMV (dmv.alaska.gov, doa.alaska.gov) and akleg.gov statutes answered 403/Cloudflare to plain fetches, and web.archive.org answered 429. The absence rests on the DOE AFDC Alaska law list (no EV fee entry), NCSL (updated 2026-07-07) and ARTBA (April 2026), which all omit Alaska.
- Kentucky. $126.00. 2026 amount not stated by a primary source. KYTC's DRIVE page (archived through Jan 2026) gives $126 as the 2025 fee and published no 2026 change; the live page (2026-10-21) no longer states an amount. The KY DOR EV power tax page (updated Aug 2026) lists no Jan 1, 2026 rate change, and the fee follows the same adjustment, so $126 is taken as the 2026 fee.
- Michigan. $267.00. Michigan Secretary of State notice 'Increase to electric vehicle registration fees' read from a copy hosted on files.constantcontact.com; michigan.gov (403) and legislature.mi.gov (connection refused) blocked plain fetches. The notice is the SOS's own document (Core Technology Division letterhead).
- Mississippi. $161.00. Mississippi raises the fee each July 1 by inflation but publishes no amount. The latest published figure is $161 from July 2022, reported by a county tax collector, so the 2026 fee is at least this much.
- Nebraska. $150.00. Statute read through the Wayback Machine capture of 2026-09-13 because nebraskalegislature.gov refused connections; this is the official statute text (effective date shown July 18, 2026).
- New Hampshire. $100.00. The NH General Court RSA site (gencourt.state.nh.us, gc.nh.gov) answered 403 or hung, and no NH DMV page was found. The amount comes from the City of Dover's official notice (2023-09-01), backed by AFDC law 13348 and the 2026 Ch. 235 text (NHLA mirror of the General Court bill text).
- New Mexico. $0.00. nmlegis.gov (bill text, FIR) and the MVD site answered 403 to plain fetches; amounts come from the SB 2 text and fiscal report as quoted in search snippets, NCSL (2026-07-07), and KRQE/KOB reports; signing date from constructionequipmentguide.com (2026-02-18) and the governor's 2026-02-02 release saying she planned to sign
- North Carolina. $214.50. ncleg.gov statute pages answered 403 and the NCDMV fee page loads its fee table from a SharePoint list that refuses anonymous access (401); amount taken from NCSL (2026-07-07), which matches ARTBA (April 2026)
- Rhode Island. $200.00. dmv.ri.gov answered 403 and the RI legislature statute server refused connections; amounts from the U.S. DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center summary (enacted Jun 29, 2025) and WJAR report of 2026-05-21 (https://turnto10.com/i-team/on-your-dime/on-your-dime-ev-owners-in-rhode-island-hit-with-new-registration-costs-gas-tax-electric-hybrid-vehicles-drivers-renewal-incentives-may-21-2026)
