This separation matters because some states treat utility charges differently for rent control purposes and some expense reimbursement programs require rent and utilities to be documented separately.

How is prorated rent calculated and shown on a receipt?

Prorated rent is calculated as the monthly rent divided by the number of days in the month, multiplied by the number of days the tenant will occupy the unit. The receipt shows the full monthly rent, the move-in date, the number of days remaining in the month, and the calculation. For example: $1,850.00 ÷ 31 days × 18 days (May 14–31) = $1,074.19.
