Frequently Asked Questions

What items appear on a regular unleaded gas station receipt?

A regular unleaded receipt shows the fuel grade (Regular 87 Unleaded), the volume purchased in gallons to three decimal places (e.g. 12.487 GAL), the price per gallon (e.g. $3.459/GAL), and the calculated fuel total. The header shows the station name, address, and pump number. Below the fuel line, a fuel tax disclosure note states the federal ($0.184/gal) and state excise tax per gallon included in the posted price. Payment method with masked card number closes the receipt.

How is the gallons × price calculation shown on a fuel receipt?

The fuel line always shows the multiplication explicitly: the gallon volume, the price-per-gallon rate, and the dollar total on one line, for example '12.487 GAL @ $3.459/GAL = $43.18'. This format is standard across all major fuel brands and is the primary line item on a gas station receipt. The math is always to at least two decimal places on the dollar amount.

What is fuel excise tax on a gas station receipt?

Fuel excise taxes are per-gallon federal and state taxes already included in the pump price; they are not added on top like sales tax. The federal gasoline excise tax is $0.184 per gallon. State taxes range from $0.08/gal (Alaska) to $0.68/gal (California). The receipt shows these as a disclosure line below the fuel total rather than as a separate charge, because the posted price per gallon already includes all excise taxes.

Can I add convenience store items to a gas station receipt?

Yes. Our regular fuel + snacks example shows how a combined fuel and convenience store receipt is formatted: the fuel line uses the fuel excise tax disclosure, while the convenience store items are taxed at the standard retail sales tax rate for the state. The two tax treatments appear in separate sections of the receipt.
