What makes a premium fuel receipt different from a regular fuel receipt?
A premium fuel receipt uses the same gallons × price-per-gallon format as regular fuel but shows a higher price per gallon, typically $0.50–$0.80 more than regular at the same station. The fuel grade line reads PREMIUM UNLEADED 93 or PREMIUM 91 depending on the station. The octane rating always appears on the receipt because it is the defining specification for the purchase. All other fields (pump number, gallon volume, station header, payment) are identical to a regular fuel receipt.
What vehicles require premium 93 octane fuel?
Most turbocharged and supercharged engines, high-compression naturally aspirated performance engines, and luxury vehicle engines require or strongly recommend premium fuel. Common examples include BMW 3-Series and above, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche, Cadillac CT-series, and most performance variants (GTI, Civic Type R, WRX). The owner's manual specifies 91 or 93 octane minimum. Using regular in these engines can cause knock and reduces performance.
How is a car wash add-on shown on a gas station receipt?
When a car wash is purchased at the pump, it appears as a separate line item below the fuel line on the same receipt. The car wash product name (e.g. ULTIMATE WASH, BASIC WASH) and price appear with any applicable sales tax calculated separately from the fuel. Fuel excise tax applies only to the fuel; the car wash is taxed at the standard state sales tax rate. The receipt shows both charges before a combined total.
Is premium fuel subject to higher excise taxes?
No. Federal and state fuel excise taxes are the same per-gallon rate for all grades of unleaded gasoline (regular, mid-grade, and premium). The federal rate is $0.184/gal for all three. State rates vary but apply equally across grades. The higher price per gallon for premium reflects refining cost and market pricing, not a higher tax rate. The excise tax disclosure on the receipt shows the same per-gallon tax rate regardless of grade.
