Vehicle Inspection Receipt Examples
See how our generator formats state safety inspection and smog check receipts: fixed inspection fee, pass/fail result, inspector ID, state certificate number, VIN, and odometer all printed exactly as your state requires.
Inspection receipts cover state safety/emissions inspections (varies by state, $20-$50 plus optional certificate fee) and smog checks ($30-$70 in CA and other emissions-testing states). These receipts include the inspector certification number, vehicle VIN, mileage, and pass/fail result.

What appears on a vehicle inspection receipt?
A vehicle inspection receipt shows the inspection type (Annual State Safety Inspection or Emissions Test), the fixed inspection fee, the pass or fail result prominently stated, the inspector's license ID number, and the state-issued certificate or sticker number. The vehicle header always includes year, make, model, VIN (last 4 or full 17-character), and odometer reading at the time of inspection. Some states require the vehicle's license plate number and registration expiration date on the receipt as well.
Are vehicle inspection fees taxable?
In most states, state-mandated vehicle inspection fees are not subject to sales tax because they are government-prescribed service fees rather than retail sales. The receipt total equals the inspection fee exactly: no tax line appears. If additional repair work is performed to bring the vehicle into compliance, those repair charges are itemized separately and may be taxable depending on the state's treatment of motor vehicle repair labor.
What is a smog check receipt and how is it different from a safety inspection receipt?
A smog check (also called an emissions test or OBD-II inspection) measures exhaust emissions and reads the vehicle's on-board diagnostic system for emissions-related fault codes. The receipt shows an OBD-II scan fee, tailpipe measurement (included), and a state test certificate fee. A safety inspection receipt covers mechanical safety items (brakes, lights, tires, steering, and wipers), not emissions. Some states combine both into a single annual inspection; others keep them as separate tests with separate fees.
Does a passed inspection receipt have any value for resale?
Yes. A current inspection receipt or sticker proves the vehicle met state safety and emissions standards at a specific date and mileage. For vehicle resale, buyers use inspection receipts to verify the car passed its last inspection, identify the mileage at that date, and confirm the certificate number matches the sticker on the windshield. Some states require a valid inspection certificate as a condition of title transfer.
